Recent Advances in Knee Surgeries
Over the past five years TKR has undergone a revolutionary change due to progress in three innovative areas.
Durability
Earlier the materials from which knee replacement implants were made of caused it to be prone for wear and relatively early failure. However current materials have prolonged the life of implants significantly. The main development has been the use of oxinium (ceramic coating on the femoral side and the use of polished cobalt chrome on the tibial side.) These innovations have come to India in the last two years.
Restoration of function
Earlier knee replacement designs did not permit high flexion activities like sitting on the floor. Current high flexion designs for knee replacement allow patients to do activities which require high degree of bending. Activity restriction which was compulsory earlier is not called for with newer implants because of longevity.
Pain control and reduced trauma of surgery
It was common for patients to be in hospital for fifteen to twenty days as the post operative period was painful, wound very large and rehabilitation extremely slow. Modern anaesthesia and pain control techniques have dramatically reduced these factors, accelerating the rehabilitation process and reducing the period of post operative hospital stay to five days. One of the important techniques routinely done in this unit is the usage of pain relief cocktail at the wound site at the time of surgical closure. This pain relief makes it very easy for the patients and reduces trauma of the surgery.

Aloha Dr.Bose,
My post op update:
I have had a remarkable experience as I have had no problems at all.I have been a bit Conservative with my exercises but as of last week I walk atleat two or three miles on the beach daily.I have never had pain or swelling since the surgery.
Dr.Bose,and Mohan,
It has been almost two and a half years since I journeyed to Chennai for my Birmingham hip replacement, and for the most part things are good with my new hip joint. The experience has had a profound effect on my life. I have since cut my long hair, and am still living in Alaska and enjoying my mobility once again. In the past few years I have had a return to pain free activities.
